August 10

Aug 9, 2025 | This Sunday in Baptist History

On this day in 1567, Christian Langedul, Cornelis Claess, Mattheus de Vick, and Hans Symons, were arrested on suspicion of being Anabaptists.  Each confessed his faith in Christ alone for salvation and they were jailed.  After a month of confinement and horrendous torture they were sentenced to death.  On September 13, the four were led to the great market place before the city hall in Antwerp, Belgium.  Each of then reiterated their faith in Christ.  Christian was taken first and was tied to a stake.  He called out to his brethren to be valiant even unto death for the truth of Christ.  Drums were beat to drown out the last words of the believers, and one by one the executioner strangled them and the fires were lit to consume their bodies.
