The history of, John Clough, an early American missionary is too astounding for the average Christian to believe. Certainly it can’t be possible that his ministry lead to the salvation of so many souls that during a period of six weeks, over 8,500 Telugu nationals were baptized. Those are the sorts of numbers we see in the Bible, and we believe them to be true THEN, but in real life? Today’s life? Why not? The omnipotent God has not changed.
John E. Clough was born on this day in 1836. After the Lord saved him he journeyed to India to preach the gospel. At one point during his outstanding life, he wrote the following: “Perhaps a century or two hence, when America and England, bloated with wealth, and given to change and show, have departed from the faith of their fathers, Telugu or Tamil or Mahratta preachers of the gospel may be sent from India as missionaries to evangelize the United States and the British Isles, or to be the star preachers in New York, Boston, Chicago and London. More improbable things have happened in the history of the church during the past eighteen hundred years.”
Was Brother Clough right? Will it take outsiders to bring America back to the Lord, or are we ready to be so filled with the Spirit that He could use us?
